therapist needs to be a good fit for you regardless of the techniques he or she uses. Often the most experienced counselors have trained in many ways of doing therapy and can look with you at which way of working is best for you.
If you already know a particular type of therapy is what you want, the Internet can be very helpful. For instance, if you're interested in EMDR and you google EMDR therapy, you'll get links to online directories, including the EMDR Institute Directory and EMDR Therapist Network.
You may want to ask the therapist what his or her experience has been working with what you would like to see change.
Personally, I would steer clear of someone who only uses one method. Individual people don't fit tidily into theories. You want the technique to be a fit for you, not the other way around.
